Change is coming to the Delvers’ Guild—whether for better or worse remains to be seen. Following the failure of a recent expedition, which resulted in the loss of a promising water source, the Deepwardens have removed the previous mission overseer and appointed Commander Dain “Ironjaw” Rusk in his place.
For those unfamiliar with the name, Rusk is no bureaucrat. A former mercenary captain, he’s known for his pragmatic approach, blunt attitude, and a reputation for getting the job done—no matter the cost. Those who have worked with him describe him as a man who values preparation over promises and results over words.
I had the opportunity to sit down with Commander Rusk to discuss his appointment and what changes Delvers can expect under his leadership.
A New Direction—Or More of the Same?
When asked about the previous overseer’s handling of operations, Rusk didn’t dwell on the past.
“I don’t know what the previous overseer’s plans and intent was,” he said, chewing thoughtfully on what looked to be an old piece of dried root. “I just know how I plan to proceed.”
When pressed about the Deepwardens’ role in Vordenth’s survival—and whether he believes they are leading the city in the right direction—Rusk’s answer was just as straightforward.
“It’s not a secret that I don’t like them, and they aren’t a fan of mine. They did choose me for this position, so I think that’ll speak for itself.”
It’s a telling response. The Deepwardens are not known for appointing individuals they cannot control—yet they have placed a man who openly admits his dislike of them into one of the most vital positions in the city’s survival.
What This Means for Future Expeditions
Rusk was tight-lipped about specifics, but one thing is clear—under his leadership, the Delvers will not be sent blindly into the dark.
“We send people out to map, to secure, to come back alive with something useful,” he said, tapping the table with one calloused finger. “I don’t care about heroics, and I sure as hell don’t care about throwing good people after bad decisions. My job is to make sure those who go out come back—preferably breathing, but at the very least in one damn piece.”
For Delvers, this may be a welcome shift. Recent expeditions have seen higher casualty rates, fewer returns, and more questions than answers. Whether Rusk’s leadership will bring stability or simply more hardened realism remains to be seen.
Looking Ahead
With Vordenth’s water crisis still unresolved, the stakes for future missions are higher than ever. The Deepwardens clearly believe Rusk is the right man for the job, even if that decision comes with its own set of risks.
For now, Delvers should prepare for change—and for an overseer who won’t tolerate wasted lives.
One thing is certain: Under Dain “Ironjaw” Rusk, no one will be left to die for nothing.
